Gastronomy

A pleasure for the senses, tradition and innovation

The maritime tradition and richness of Peñíscola’s coasts, together with the ancestral knowledge and creativity of its cooks, makes the cuisine of Peñíscola one of the healthiest, freshest and most inventive on the Mediterranean coast.
In this region fishing is closely linked to the art of cooking, and is carried out with great care and sensitivity. The produce is also cooked with the same care, in order to bring out the natural aromas and flavours of such an exquisite and highly valued natural richness.
Typical dishes from Peñíscola include: monkfish "all i pebre", "Suquet" (a casserole made with several kinds of fish), seafood, date mussels, spinous murices (mollusc), crayfish and king prawns.
There is also a great variety of rice dishes cooked with produce from the sea, such as mixed paella, lobster paella, seafood paella, "arròs caldós", "fideuà" (noodle dish) and black rice.
The various and delicious typical dishes of Peñíscola are not only based on round delicacies from the sea, but also the Mediterranean diet which is famous for its vegetables. The privileged location of this town offers the visitor a large selection of vegetables such as broad beans, artichokes, tomatoes, aubergines, onions or green asparagus, which when combined with produce from the sea become a tasty, healthy and exquisite dish.
To add a sweet touch to the end of a good meal, why not try the "biscuit del frare Vicent" (almond sponge cake), "flaons de Peñíscola" (cake made with cottage cheese and almonds), "pastissets de carabassa" (pumpkin pulp with honey and lemon) or the typical Pope Luna's cakes (almonds, orange, honey and cottage cheese). If you prefer fresh fruit, Peñíscola’s fields provide pomegranates, plums, oranges, figs, apples, melons and watermelons.
The freshness and exceptional flavour of our sea and garden produce, together with the climate, geography, customs and way of life of this town, all help to make up the Mediterranean diet, which is known to be the healthiest, tastiest and most balanced diet in the world. The combination of all these elements give a wonderful feeling of well-being.
The diversity of Mediterranean cultures and civilizations, from Egypt and Ancient Greece to the present time, have contributed with their knowledge, wisdom and gastronomy to this valuable legacy.
