The Museum building is located on the Prince's Bastion, which is the wall furthest to the east on the promontory upon which the city of Peñíscola stands. Possibly of medieval origin, it took on its current form in the 18th century to make room for the installation of an artillery barracks. From 1912 onwards this space was known as Les Costures ("the Schools" in English) as the old buildings were reconditioned for use as classrooms for the local schools. The building was left abandoned after these schools moved out in 1969.
In 1993 Peñíscola's Vocational School began restoration works on the building and the bastion and in 1996 refurbishment works were carried out in order to make it suitable for museum use. The founding goal of the Maritime Museum is the preservation, dissemination and safeguarding of Peñíscola's cultural heritage as a seafaring town. It is divided into three sections, each with a different theme: history and archeology, fishing and marine wildlife.
The museum's permanent exhibition consists of exhibits (archeological and ethnological pieces), model ships, graphic documents, multimedia displays (CD-ROMs and videos) and three aquariums featuring Mediterranean marine species.
